Magazine Moments

Sean on top of the world, literally and figuratively
for DSection
Coming clean here. Lately, I've been pretty dry on the magazine department. I still read and have the titles that I work for and they're good. But I'm not as excited over magazines and titles like before. I don't know what it is, but the some of titles I've been seeing lately haven't been as inspiring as they should be. For people like me, what gets printed ought to be magical, amazing, inspiring, relevant and should aim for an iconic, star-making moment for the people responsible in making an article, a photograph, a cover. And after growing up going through magazines and having invested myself in an appreciation for beauty, I've clung to the power of an image or a title and how, in a single issue, photograph, moment they successfully capture a feel, a mood, a piece of history. There are a few titles that are able to do this and I hope there were more.

I wish I could see more of these kinds of photos, people and magazines around. While the country already has its slew of great quality publications, I'll one day be sure that we could make more titles that are able to create, influence and hopefully change the landscape or add to the beauty that we already enjoy. Fingers crossed, I'd be able to contribute to this too. In the meantime, while we wait for this to come true, here are some of the greatest magazine moments I've seen this month.

Moving Pictures

Don't blink, cause Mikkel Jensen's here and on his way up!
Mark my words, this one's out to get it big.
VOGUE Hommes Japan Spring 2013 Preview @ models.com
Give the world a few more years for publications to achieve what Harry Potter has been suggesting us all along: photos in motion on paper. Imagine that. Imagine GQ's cover coming to life, CD cover art living behind their cases, posters of wanted criminals breathing, like snippets from a film. Not impossible for sure. This makes most sense since we're at the age of marrying realities, magazines embedded with codes to be scanned for additional features, things like that. And I believe the challenge for print to stay relevant is for it to ride along with where the world is headed to, if not give it a start towards the right direction one augmented reality at a time.

Good Show

What're we looking at?
Hane, loving that Balenciaga on you. The bag, the Valentino, the cane, the no-fuss hair...
from STREETFSN

I'm thinking of doing an interview again with STREET FSN's Nam. Last time I talked to Nam was probably two years ago, when he was starting to get some good footing in the scene. His photographs now are awfully exciting and every bit the collection of  photographs you'd expect from the best of today's street style photographers. But it's not just the fact that I do follow his blog and have had the privilege to interview him before that makes me say he's one of the better street style bloggers and photographers out there. There is a lightness and surge of inspiration I always feel after seeing his photos. That and more I'd love to explore and learn about from Nam himself (fingers crossed). While I piece together an interview in my head, I oblige you to take inspiration from the beautiful people he takes photos of. And enjoy your weekend!

To Inspire

Been dry on the fashion front lately. I used to be so into it, that I had committed to memory so much things about fashion. Now, I feel like I've lost touch. Well maybe not completely, but to put it in better terms, I've placed more time and effort on other things than the pursuit of all things fashion.

I might've mentioned before, under much pretense, how fashion is my first love. Truth is, it's not. It's one among the many things I've conveniently bundled under the label "BEAUTY" or "ART", which I love dearly. But I can never deny that fashion plays such a crucial role in my life and how I view things.

I'm the kind of person who---honestly, believes it's a valid excuse to pass on an event when I'm not dressed accordingly. That's valid in my book. Like that successful Magnum ball last Wednesday. I was so out of it, I went to the launch looking like I tried to meet the event's dress code, instead of actually wearing it. This close I tell you, to calling it a day for that event, but all turned out well and happy and fun, even when I didn't dress the part.

I'm also the kind of person who notices style and how people dress. It's the story angle about it which I love and I find incredibly exciting about fashion and style. How a camel blazer looks different on different guys, or how those "mandatory" glittery, hanging tops look sexy on others and ultra feminine on some.

This all started when I came home last night, at around 3 in the morning I went on YouTube to see if my favorite, favorite model--Garrett Neff, had anything new on video. His latest one was an episode from Brad Goreski's series and it showed Brad styling for that DETAILS issue with Ashton on the cover (September 2011). Here's the case in point and you'll understand how things look incredibly different for different people. Even when both Garrett and Ryan are models (and they do look alike somehow), both of them lend their own touches to styled looks. It's that personal touch I look for, that feel of anything unique and for a lack of a better term, the personal in fashion, which I always find so interesting and inspiring.

And while I've decided to get back on updating myself in terms of style and fashion, I'm glad the internet is home to so much inspiration, you'll never have a reason again to say no to an event (like me) because you're not dressing the part.

I hope you enjoy these collection of inspirations, things, you've noticed, I really love to do for my blog, and I hope you'll find something enlightening in everything here as I have.

Polka Dots and Moonbeams

Arizona Muse as Adeline

Stories: All-New Tales edited by Neil Gaiman and Al Sarrantonio has only been a few hours under my possession and I already love the 20-something short stories by today's most read authors (Jodi Picoult, Chuck Palahniuk, Neil Gaiman, Peter Straub and more). It's an attractive little anthology because it has the heaviest name dropping in Literature you could imagine---if you are, that is, into the name dropping. The cover has this real nice texture and its simple, almost kiddy look adds much to how deep the stories are inside. It's pricey, of course to people who don't have the bone or inclination towards books and magazines and/or anything that requires some time of the day for reading, but for people like myself it's a steal, really.

Magazines, are definitely drugs to me, but books are like quick vacations. I've been tired at work and even though I enjoy it, I still need that break. I sometimes wish I was the kind of person who doesn't need to stop, but anyway...Yeah. If you want to take your mind off things, sort of detoxify it from the usual, I suggest you pick-up a book and get away for a while. It keeps me inspired in all aspects: writing, creativity, the imagination, life, language and the lot. So if you do have the time and if you're itching for something to read, this one's a perfect solution.

How do you say Stylish in Italian?

How the Italians do it, thanks to Street FSN

Pitti Uomo... that week in Italy that's all about menswear and what we're bound to wear (or aspire to wear at least) for next year's Spring season started today. And as you know, street style now a days is probably the equivalent---if not better, of what the boys wear down the runway. So the buzz over what the big boys are wearing during Pitti Uomo will get your heart palpitating, cause it's always that stylish.
Street FSN's photoblogger Nam, whom I had the pleasure to interview last year for THE EDGE, is a big, big, big name now and his photos are such amazing slices off of the fashion world (believe me, the photographs will take you to depths and/or heights of greed and envy---at times lust. They're that palpable.)

The Heat List

David Foster Wallace & his late greatness @ GQ
Summer starts today, for me. Why? Wala lang. Grades are out (and final), and yes, I've done well. All of my hard work has finally paid off.
I'm waiting for my last one subject---that one subject I have been nervous about for probably a month now, and this is exactly how summer has felt for me for ages.
A lazy, waiting that could stretch for forever. And while I'm (hopefully) finally done with school, I decided it's time for a summer lifestyle change.

Here is a compilation of great things I've been interested in for a while. From David Foster Wallace's intriguing GQ story (not to mention his much-talked about novel The Pale King) to Laureen Uy's super style to our photoshoot, to Goodies magazine to Perry Como and more.
Let's quit the yapping and get it on with the Heat List.

WHO THE HELL IS DAVID FOSTER WALLACE?

David Foster Wallace's story on GQ is very interesting so far. For me, the great thing about it is how fellow writer and author of this article, John Jeremiah Sullivan writes about the controversial and contemporary literature icon. Read more about it and answer the question, why the hell should we care about David Foster Wallace, here.

GOODIES COMING
THE EDGE column @ Goodies mag

When a certain Kelvin Zlochevsky e-mailed me sometime ago, I had no idea what Goodies Mag was. The invitation to become a columnist for the New York-based online magazine was more than humbling. One of my dreams has always been to write as a columnist for a newspaper. That was when the internet wasn't the internet. Goodies magazine, in a nutshell is a guy's magazine. From all those babes you'd want to be with to the music you ought to listen to to the latest eateries 'round the world and to more masculine concerns you should be concerned with, Goodies has got it figured well. Make sure you check out soon what I'm writing for Goodies. I've been thinking about Star Trek lately and its odd connection to Prada...Why? How? Well, better read it when it's done.

THE DELHOMME TOUCH

Jean-Philippe Delhomme for Kitsune's Spring 2011 campaign @ HighSnobiety

A GQ reader would know JP Delhomme, for his languid, super chic and cool illustrations are regulars at the Style Guy section. This Spring 2011, Delhomme lends his awesome touch to Maison Kitsune's for handsome illustrations that tell a fantastic story. If only clothes really looked that cool, I'd spend a leg over them. Great work Delhomme...Now if only I could have these framed.

SUMMER DRESSING
My favorite summer lady look @ BreakMyStyle

Undeniably one of the most fashionable personalities I've seen, Laureen Uy shows ladies how a dressed-up summer looks like. She's always turned out, no doubts about that, but this super chic ensemble is my favorite. What I love about it is how it's all so summery, what with that almost sheer top lined with pink, buttoned-up to perfection and paired down with a beautifully-printed skirt. At first I thought it was a dress, but her credits prove that with the right pieces combined, you could create a look that's all your own. I'd be Tommy Ton to whoever could dress this elegantly. People just don't dress this clean and polished these days. We're too casual a generation, I'm guilty, and this is an example that dressing up sometimes does you great things. Follow Laureen's blog and keep track of her stylish adventures....

PERRY & PAUL
Papa Loves Mambo by Perry Como

Cool Hand Luke starring Paul Newman

Knowing this blog (and me), old school tribute and reference is a must! I'm giving my usuals the break (Dean, Clift, Brando, E & F Fitzgerald, Shearing, Holiday, etc.) for two P's: Perry Como and Paul Newman. Since I've been hooked on old school songs sometime now, I listen to my grandmother's station of choice after lunch...Dr. Love on Radio DZMM plays you all these old-timey tunes and when you're young, you'll think it's cheap, old, korny and what have you, but for those of us who have a classic bone, this is a pretty fun station to tune into. Perry Como is a playback king in Dr. Love's station and it doesn't hurt that he's pretty stylish and one of the great-looking men I've seen.
Paul Newman is another stylish inspiration. After seeing Cat on a Hot Tin Roof with the late Elizabeth Taylor, I started to like Paul Newman a lot. He and McQueen, I believe are more of the same calibre, than the Holy Trinity. Anyway, Paul Newman is a stunner for sure stylewise and as an actor. I'm downloading more of his movies and I'm excited to watch them all.

SMILE FOR THE CAMERA

Hey doll. Jessica Stam and loads more of today's most beautiul people @ICanTeachYouHowToDoIt
Great-looking people, you could say, is my drug of choice. There is no other experience out there for me that could take you on a high than seeing and oggling at handsome ladies and beautiful men. I Can Teach You How To Do It by fellow Gerard, Gerard Estadella is an amazing blog (and why I found it just now, I have no idea). This is definitely one of the blogs I'll be frequenting this summer, just so I have inspiration when it comes to taking pictures and being taken. Just always remember to put your best face on and you'll surely get photos as great as Estadella's.

BACK TO SCHOOL

The most beautiful rucksack I've seen @ Selectism
The first ever rucksack I had was from my mom's, a black bag printed with Mickey Mouse's profile all over in different colors. Then I have my Forever 21 one which is really the biggest bag I have and I've used it way too often. This Bill Amberg Hunter Rucksack though is definitely an art. The delicious leather, the color, the tiny gold accents, not to mention the deep sea green inner lining of this bag that makes it extra charming for me, has got me begging for money in the streets. Maybe going back to school is a great idea, I mean, I could pursue my master's degree AND carry this around, now that's an amazing deal right there.

FALLING IN LOVE WITH SASHA

I still can't believe she has kids and she's not in her teens. Sasha Pivovarova, otherwise known a just plain Sasha, is a mad presence on the runway. And by mad I mean that in the best, most casual way. Top model---and not just a title you throw around, Sasha's awfully beautiful here for Free People and she's looking radiant, young and oh so fragile, it kills me. I'm having this video on my iPod soon. And I can't hold myself from tearing up when she's doing that two-tooth model smile, it's beautiful.

I'll be coming up with more of these while summer's here. Enjoy you guys!

It's Like That

Remember talking to Mia here about graduation gifts.
Still praying for you Mia.
Photographys by the Lesley Choa
Currently still bothered by a.) my always problematic ear b.) that project I have with (dot dot dot) and c.) the resumes I've sent to the magazines I want to work for. Bothered doesn't always mean a negative. Troubled, I say is more derogatory than bothered, don't you agree? I was never a "kampante" kind of person, one who despite the most obvious of positive facts would be able to sit back and relax. I'm a big nervous wreck and as I've mentioned before, the trick is to keep it all cool outside while inside you're like a volcano about to go burzurk. And I always, always have to tell myself to calm the (fuck) down, cause worrying could only make things worse. Thing is though, it's my magic. It seems like the more I build myself up for the panic, the more "better" the outcome is for me. See... The world has its odd ways. It's like that, and that's way it is, some RUN DMC for you.

Let's drop the worrying for a while and talk about the RUN DMC shirt. I have a RUN DMC shirt and an AC/DC shirt and a Mickey Mouse shirt I got from SM---by the way, in the next days I'll be posting this cool, cool style diary project I have of myself, and I know it sounded vain, but it's not that vain..., and you'd wonder if wearing shirts with these prints on them reflect my interests and what have you. Sure. RUN DMC, I'm no huge fan of, but I appreciate their music, thus the look. AC/DC's the same case for me. Mickey Mouse, however is a bit of an issue. I'm a Donald Duck, not a Mickey Mouse. But it turns out that while I was snooping 'round SM for something good to get for the dreaded summer days to come---long sentence right there, this really cool Mickey Mouse shirt had the best size and colors that I liked. Donald Duck's designs weren't that good for me. SO....there. Anyway, this street-ish style I've been pulling off on my lazy days. You'll probably see me in more of these especially when April comes cause that's when doing my usual layering style would cause me a heat stroke. You know how Manila gets, it's all t-shirt weather and God bless you if you have the body to pull off a birthday suit. Yeah. And I'm still blaming Chico Lachowski for this.

Now, we go back to the worry. Last day of school was yesterday. I know. And I'm like "why the hell am I not going sentimental all over this"? I mean, I just said goodbye not only to a great, great, great, great, great college life, but also to the decade-long education before university. Then my heart starts going a little too fast than its normal pace and I realize that in a matter of weeks/months/(hopefully not) years, I'd be entering the real world all of education has prepped us for. While all of this is happening, right, news goes and warns us of a 10.5 earthquake that could POSSIBLY hit our country (I repeat, it's a possibility). Others can shrug it off and say "if it happens, it happens", but I'm not like that. Seriously, the moment I heard this I couldn't sleep straight. So I've been constantly in prayer. We don't want to lose more lives, and to think we're still praying for Japan. And while all of this is happening, I'm worried sick about a subject I have and of the future jobs I'd be getting and of a place to stay in when I'm, say, 22 (I'm 21 now)....

So what I do is, I go---at night, to the park, sit myself down and think it all out. Here's the cheesy part: I'm sitting on a blue swing right, listening to whatever's on my iPod, and I look up and the moon's  looking back at me, perfect inside a frame of dark, dark leaves of a tree and then the wind brings you this summer night chill and you want to giggle at yourself cause you feel like it's all coming from some novel you've read and found on Tumblr, and then it hits you again...That freaking sound of your own voice, in a panic of what life and what is beyond life about to bring you in the next seconds... Then you calm yourself down again and laugh at yourself cause, honestly, you know you're starting to sound like a schizo.

The moral of this post is that, we have come at an age where paying so close attention to what the latest news about you is, is just plain old useless. We're old. It's like that. We age, we grow and we start on a journey to close the latest, extremely tough and beautiful chapter of a young life. Up to this very moment, I'm still entering that Samuel Beckett kind of thinking and (yes, that's one reason why I picked up smoking...Sorry) I'm trying my hardest to be on top of it all. And to think, the future's still not here yet. It's only beginning. Hah. Well, what I'm surely happy and grateful of is that God has always had such great love for me and for the people around me. Even when things start to look so bothering, troubling and dark, we still get to experience those (not cheesy) great moments in between and it's not such a bad life at all.

It's really just like that.

More of these good bye posts---ones that are more straight to the heart, in the next days. As of now, I have put aside worrying cause I'm soooo sleepy.

The Religion

The look you have to have for Paris Fashion Week @ GQ by Tommy Ton

These dudes are pulling off the looks I'd gladly pull off had I been in their shoes and in their clime. As you know I'm not a fan of in-your-face style (but I do appreciate it on others) and this kind of style I treat as a religion...Yes, I am a follower and pretty soon, I'd be heralded a Saint. Okay, so maybe that last part was me talking in a dream, and I'm punching myself as of the moment but the point is, the subscription to this kind of style is deadly. Something about all their rebellious, subtle ways' making me itchy and hungry all of a sudden. It's always the quiet that gets me, you know? Well, here's to worshiping this religion (and by that I mean no offense to any "real" religions).
Tommy Ton's at it again.

I say Amen. Emmenez-moi Ã  Paris!!!! (Translated by Noelle and Gene...my lovely friends)

Currently in a convulsion. MAN, this is sooo my style.
Yeah, naysayers say they don't see me wearing this. That's cause it's never good down here.

When Legends say Goodbye

"I've been through it all baby, I'm mother courage" --- Elizabeth Taylor

"I don't think you can contrive any sound..." ---- George Shearing

When legends say goodbye, they mean it for the mean time.
And that is why you have to credit the French for differentiating good bye from good bye forever. Elizabeth Taylor, one of the world's most beautiful faces passed away today. And apparently, Jazz genius George Shearing passed away a month ago as well. I understand the beauty and enigma of Elizabeth Taylor, for who would close his eyes at a face like hers? She is a beautiful soul as well and God has charmed her life in so many ways. As for George Shearing, his music will always be part of a distant past I've never been able to enjoy. He is the talent and for this generation, I am afraid music as pure and as haunting as his would be a rare thing to find.

These two may have bid us good bye for now, but, like all great faces and names and people, memory will save for them an eternal place on Earth. Rest in Peace for them both. As Shearing plays, these two will surely be around still...

The Hitchcock Syndrome

Run Cary, Run!!!! Cary Grant in Hitchcock's North by Northwest

By now you've probably seen Lady Gaga's latest video, Born This Way and how the start is taken from Vertigo Hitchcock's really eerie movie. And so you want to believe that the classic, psychological thriller legend, Hitchcock is but a mere reference Gaga used for her latest project...
But then you realize that Hitchcock is not just impressing Gaga, but also the people who were responsible for Bottega Veneta's Spring 2011 campaign (one of my favorites this season). Check this out.

Santiago Montero and Karolina Kurkova play 2011 Hitchcock muses for Bottega Veneta's well-shot and very, very elegant campaigns. It might not be the intention behind it, but this shot is just a dead-ringer for Cary Grant's North by Northwest shot above. The others make me think of Birds just because there are birds in the background and at the same time, those dashboard shots remind me of scenes from the movie, when all they could do is stare in fear from inside their semi-safe cars.

Amazing shot...The black, glossy jacket, the pristine white trousers, the super chic bag
and then it's the eternal blue of the sky and the grays and whites of birds balancing the entire thing

Santiago Montero for Bottega Veneta

Karolina Kurkova for Bottega Veneta...
Another great shot

Turns out Alex Prager, as I go deep into research, is the photographer for the campaign and what he's known for are these kinds of photos.

An Alex Prager signature

I don't know (yet) if ever this has Hitchcock in it, but the resemblances are pretty much leading me to conclude that they are inspired by Hitchcock: the beautiful girls, the 60s clothes, (duh) the birds and just all these other sort of sinister slants on the photos. Amazing what little knowledge of art and film and culture and fashion could do to you... Bottega Veneta wins my vote for Best Campaign this season...

The Rogue

Steve McQueen from The Selvedge Yard

"I don't believe in that phony hero stuff."

So he claims, but I consider him heroic when it comes to style and having left something very inspiring for posterity. Their generation of stars, I will always find most appealing...and I guess that's because I find them relatable and there's something romantic about the way they looked at things. They sound cold and bitter and too brooding to some, but to me it explains having seen much of the world's pains but having the good humor, the mystery and the tiny bit of humility to handle them with. Most definitely my definition of a rogue. This month is his birthday and this is sort of my tribute to one of my idols.

Oh, and if only I could jump and be as cool-looking as him playing frisbee...When I play, I don't have the time or the natural ability to look good and be photographed.

Never Gonna Leave This Bed

Maroon 5 deserves a Grammy...They're so damn good...Plus they always make such cool videos.
Not to mention that they're such stylish lads, it makes their videos all the more interesting. I am praying I could watch them this May...

To my dear sister Joanne, the CD you bought me is one of the finest things you're money's bought. That's a true, true story.

I hope the video they have for "Just A Feeling" and "I can't lie" would be just as good.

Nikolalalala

Backstage @ DSquared2...
Nikola, who are you texting? BBM-ing?

As a sort of training for Salt readers, you all are aware of my weekend-y style inspiration posts. I keep saying this, to myself, to Bryle, to Tj, to everyone: the model-off-duty look, is all the craze right now and I'm hopping on the bandwagon because I could relate to it. Shame on me, I know...To claim that I could relate to superhuman figures (uttered in a British accent) is sacrilege. But I do like the easy, semi dressed-up looks they all come out with and Gucci boy, Nikola Jovanovic is a pretty handsome peg to start your style study with.

Cheekbones and that million dollar pout aside, Nikola dresses well for his age. I believe he's somewhere near my age and his style is nothing revolutionary: t-shirt, jeans and a pair of cool kicks. It's definitely the nonchalance and the seemingly brandless pieces he favors that gets me. Models, you know are getting goodie bags from designers, especially when you're an exclusive like Jovanovic, and somehow the things they get (if I'm ever correct about these things) don't carry much branding. Unless of course it's a Chanel bag or the logo's sprawled across the chest, but the reason why I'm a huge fan of models-off-duty looks is cause you could do it. I mean, check out O'pry and how he does layering with sort of run-of-the-mill items that look so damn good on him. And yes, the face and the fact that he's a model makes it ten million times better. The same goes with Nikola.

Then again, there are people I know, like a certain classy lady from school (I'm shy to put her name here) who goes to class wearing ballet flats, skinny jeans and a plain top and her finest accessories would come in simple earrings, a nice bag and a haunting perfume that would linger in your dreams. I mean, it helps that she's pretty and very lady-like, but the point is the effort she puts into dressing drops to zero but she manages to look like a million bucks. It's a cliche, I know, but then you look at other people who are so conscious (ehem, guilty) of the way they look and are too tied-up with labels and for some (actually a billion) reason, miserably fail. I admit to having the biggest bias for people who look good and could disarm you a mile away cause they give themselves the right amount of care and could fair as a nominee for a best-dressed list, I mean, that's the way to do it. And I'm not getting into all that inner beauty I'm-meditating-under-a-tree thing people get so caught up with. I'm all for looking good and at the same time giving yourself the space for "stylish" abandon and (to borrow from gay lingo and to take it a different meaning) "carry".

Nikola Jovanovic, with his black plain shirt, those skinny jeans and a pair of gray plus lime green sneakers has got me hooked. I'm now swearing allegiance to Team Nikola.

You could have this high-quality printed, frame it and it's art...
That hair, Jesus Christ...It's amazing.
Now THAT's stylish...

New York's Most Stylish

Do you know everybody here? I don't.
I just recognize their faces. Palermo, of course. Lezark and Waris Ahluwalia

I keep going back to that Prada fringe skirt wearing lady I saw years back (when Miuccia went for a sporty fall 2007 collection...that was beautiful) trotting her way through St. Patrick's and that just had the most haunting hold on me...In New York, and I say this every single time, the minute you land on a platform, somewhere in the city, the air hits your face and your just in adrenaline, cause you know everywhere and everyone's an inspiration. So you wouldn't wonder why New York has 50 super stylish people from the fashion world, featured on Stylecaster...
And I'm sure there's 50 more you just couldn't put on publication cause it'll cost you money. But the story of New York always has style in it...No one tires of New York...And if you have, at one point, thought of it as such, it probably just wasn't your day... (unless you really don't like New York, then I understand).

To be Philip Crangi's assistant is a divine NYC starting job.
He's my latest style icon...
